  • Thanks Kevin. Glad you stockpiled some. I could never find the time to get a round tuit.
  • I've always enjoyed the cabinet castings.

  • Wonderful! I too have a bit of a thing for cabinets!
  • I also agree the cabinets are really neat. I wish Brett would come out with casting sets with a selection of just cabinets. Another set could be work benches. And yet another idea could be boxes full of junk parts! Hint, Hint!
  • Thanks Brett and Tom. Got all the castings primed now and will get to work on them.

Been toying around with the tree. I have the branch structure laid out and am starting to add bark which is ground up leaves secured with white glue. I did not go with a layer of latex this time. These branches tips are really thick and latex will just get them to stick together.

In the closeup you can see some areas will need a 2nd coat to get rid of the twisted wire look. The individual branches are much easier to see in person than in these photos. Hopefully when painted they will pop more.

Hope I'm not barking up the wrong tree here.

  • Bryan,
I look forward to your small project(s) updates, especially the tree build project. Keep it rolling!
  • Thanks Kev. Dave, the trees are ready for paint. I made a couple so I could pick the best one out.

A little color experimentation on the barrels. One brown the other gray. Also got to the resin spools. I was able to replicate the color from the wood ones. That's a good sign.

  • Fantastic work. Especially love the color of the grey barrel. That is more difficult. How did you achieve that color......Rick
  • Thanks Rick.

Light gray primer followed by AK enamel "Wash for gray decks". When dry, drybrush with light gray. another wash, wipe this one off with a Q-tip to remove almost all of the surface wash. Rust texture paint for the bands.
  • Both barrels look great Bryan as do the spools. Cable looks convincing as well, nice job.
  • Boy, that’s some fine work on the barrels Bryan. I especially like the “warm” brown colored one. Clearly shows that it hasn’t been out in the weather much compared to the more gray barrel.

I’ll be watching your progress on the tree. I’ve had that style on my bucket list but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Quick question: are you using air-dry clay for the base layer?
  • Excellent work as always Bryan.
  • Thanks all.

The cable was painted with "Adamantium" from the SW paints as a base then dark steel pigments were added for the silver highlights. You could use graphite also.

Yes Bill. DAS air dry clay in teracotta color. Very nice to work with. And yes, a bare deciduous tree has been on my bucket list for a long time also. Never thought I could pull that off. We shall see.
  • Great work and detail.
  • Thanks Robert.

Here are the 3 tree finalists. Pic 1 is a bit thin on the branch tips. 2 & 3 got much more branch tips using finer wire...28g vs 26g. I'll be able to use these photos to work on some of the branch tips that look out of place. I can bend them or remove them to get a good look.

The close up on the trunk is very close to the actual color. A nice brown gray. Right now the tree with the fluted trunk is growing on me.

  • I'm calling Bryan the "Wizard of the Woodland"...great work.
  • Thanks Ken. Perhaps I should make an avatar.

  • That's him!...maker of trees extraordinaire...
  • Nice tree. Comes right out of Lord of the Rings...
  • The last march of the Ents?
  • I'm getting started on more of the mundane (Brett's word) details. These bare metal details got a base coat of a neutral gray with some aged pewter blended in to give the look of tin. Layers of multi-colored rust on the milk jug give some depth I think. A couple of things jump out to me.

Next time I should use different sized wire on the oil jug with a smaller size for the cap handle. I'm also thinking I should sand off the handles of the milk and trash can and use wire for them also.2A6C118D-80EB-4685-8A1A-2FFFFD2BBD69

  • Next generation castings by BB...
  • Same great castings with a slightly different approach.

A progression on a barrel here using a chipping technique. Started with a yellow barrel and chipped it with a light yellow. Touch up the light yellow chips with dark rust. Add some enamel rust, a label (with an unintended wrinkle), a light layer of dust. And finally some rust streaks and a light touch of oil stain on top. It's scary getting in this close as all of the imperfections show up very clearly.

  • Personally, I’d be quite happy with these results! Very realistic looking.
  • Thanks Alan. I'm not unhappy with the results. It looks very believable to the naked eye. I use the super closeups to find things that I can work on next time.
  • They look great Bryan. Wish mine turned out that crappy
