Pictures of Jerry's house are like looking at a Christmas card.

As a transplant to the Tucson area, after 63 years living in the Chicago area, I can't help but notice the steeply pitched steel roof on Jerry's house. Beats having to shovel that white stuff off the roof after a foot or more of snow. Been there done that!, We don't have to shovel heat in Tucson, right Steve?

  • Right on Dave. Our modeling time is in the summer when we hibernate from the heat under the AC.
  • Dave not my house that's Carl's place. And he built it himself. Here's a picture looking up from the living room to the ceiling above.

Carl has a magnificent home and is quite the craftsman. I have been a long time fan of the TV program Barnwood Builders and Carl's work is among the best completed projects I have seen aired on the programs. Over a span of about 55 years I have done some building and have a reverence for the kind of craftsmanship displayed by Carl and other timber frame builders. There are some very complex joints on display in that photograph (well above my pay grade to be sure). These types of joints require an engineering background and the ability to make complex, precise mortise and tenon joints then hoist into place with an experienced crane operator. It is a labor of love to be sure.

    Steve,
I couldn't agree more about summer being our modeling/building time. Out here in Tucson we don't have the luxury of a basement to build in either.

Wish I was there. To meet Carl and Jerry in person would be quite an honor.
I wear cargo pants year round. What's the big deal?

    But yours have legs!!

We might go back up in March get your snow shoes and join us!!!

    Jerry

  • March to cold for your shorts??

No month is too cold in Florida. Vermont outside in April may prompt long pants.
I love to shovel by hand. I do miss that.

Shovel by hand!! I'll pass that on to Carl.. Have you seen his driveway!!

Every time I see this topic I hear Willie Nelson singing "Moonlight In Vermont", one of my all time favorite vocals, and sing and resing certain phrases over and over in my head:
    Pennies in a stream
    Fallen leaves of sycamore
    Moonlight in Vermont.
Incredible lyrics and poetry by John Blackburn. Music composed by Karl Suessdorf around 1944.
Link to Willie's rendition of Moonlight In Vermont from Willie's album Stardust. Click on the arrow for the song.

    Pennies in a stream
    Falling leaves the sycamore
    Moonlight in Vermont

    Icy finger waves
Ski trails down the mountain side
    Snow light in Vermont

Telegraph cables, they sing down the highway
And travel each bend and the road
People who meet in this romantic setting
Are so hypnotized by the lovely

    Evening summer breeze
    Evening summer breeze
    Warbling of the meadowlark
The sweet warbling of the meadowlark
    Moonlight in Vermont

    Icy finger waves
Ski trails on a mountain side
    Snow light in Vermont

Telegraph cables, how they sing down the highway
As they make every bend in the road
People who meet, in this romantic setting
Are so hypnotized by the lovely

    Evening summer breeze
    Evening summer breeze
The sweet warbling of the meadowlark
Moonlight in Vermont, snow light in Vermont
    Moonlight in Vermont
    Evening and moonlight in Vermont

  • Willie is a great story teller for sure. One gets to believe he truly knows what he is singing or telling a story about.
