My First diorama - The Loco Shop

My wife got me a couple kits as a 40th birthday gift(back in January).. i'm finally getting close-ish to completion...

Ok,

Now that i'm on a "real" computer.. The two kits that were birthday gifts were the loco shop and the Donkey repair. This diorama will eventually go on a floating shelf in my office. which is why the size is the way it is. I ended up buying a lot of Brett's ho casting kits.


Thus far i'm almost complete.. I'm not quite sure where I want to put the crane, which is why it's in a temporary base for testing purposes.. if anyone has any input as to where they think the crane should go, I would be happy to hear it.

Alex, if this is your first diorama, you did a fantastic job. If I may give you a tip for the photos, when you take close ups, try ,if possible, to isolate the subject from what's behind with a piece of cardboard, paper or something similar. Paint bottlles, tools, and other workshop things in the background, deviate the attention from what is important. And that is your nice diorama.

That's a great first diorama!

Where you have the crane seems like a good spot. When it comes to presenting a diorama I find that getting something in about the right position for it to be accurate takes second place to getting something in the right place to enhance the look of the diorama. So for your crane, it looks good where it is at. Would it likely be on the other side of the structure and away from the oil tank? Perhaps, but I don't think that placement would look as good.

I agree with Bryan. Things need to be where they have a purpose. That is loading and unloading goods for the crane and where it is now, it will do the job. So, I would leave it there.

I used some of the extra paper in the Donkey repair kit that is used for the canvas wrap. I'm not exactly sure what type of paper it is. Once colored and wetted with alcohol it was very easy to shape.

Very, Very nice Alex. I agree with the other comments for a first diorama this is very good. Your structure and details placement is great. I think the only thing I would consider doing differently is to remove some of the dirt, ballast from the top of the track ties. I would think for old logging siding they wouldn't go to the effort as they would for a mainline, thus less tie coverage. Your scenery is also very good. It bends well with the overall structure layouts. This is going to look great in your office and be quite a conversation piece!
