I’m trying to grasp the functionality of a wood plank roof as in Brian Nolan’s Addison Tie and Lumber. This style of roof seems common of sawmills (which Is my current build) . I’m using trusses at 48” centers with 2x6 purlins. The roof boards and 2x8/2x10 boards with the long edge butt joints covered with 2x4/2x6 battens.
Not a completely watertight roof system so I’m wondering in a layer of tarpaper would have been placed between the purlins and roof boards. Seems like significant sagging would occur with the tarpaper….all clear as mud?
Thoughts?
Terry

Terry asked about boarded roofs in another thread.

Now granted, the way some of us model them they really wouldn't be water tight, with all the character, deterioration, interest and weathering we add.

However in the real world they were used quite a lot as a cheap and quick way to protect a structure. As far as I remember/understand the boards are butted closely and covered with the battens. When the boards get wet they swell and close any small gaps between the boards thus making it water tight.

Here are a few examples.

Hey guys, my Narrow Gauge Gazette came today and this picture was in there. I'm intrigued. It is a home-made locomotive using a single drum donkey. Note the size of the wheel to the far right. That's on a log disconnect so figure its 30" or so. The wheels on that critter must be around 12".

Can anyone find any other pictures of this or anything like it? I'd love to build one.
I saw this run down building while on vacation. What caught my attention was the stack of tires on the the one side--just like you see in SW kits. As I looked closer I realized "this little crap hole's got it ALL": peeling paint, distressed wood, collapsing roof, rusting tank, coils of wire, and clutter everywhere. Even the window panes are cracked or broken per an SW construction manual! Hopefully you'll find some detail inspiration in these:

Found this Flicker group that shares photos of a rail line in Vancouver. While it isn't a "one stop shop" for reference pictures, it does have a little of everything: steam, diesel, rolling stock, logging, scenery, bridges, etc. Just when I was getting bored by the modern diesel pictures, the next page would have a collection of steam donkeys or an old Shay. It'd get to a long string of trains loading ships, then the next set would be a collection of killer bridge images. If you look closely, even the modern stuff has value--how vegetation grows in a yard, close-ups of rust on machinery, how clutter is "organized", etc. Here are a few examples:

A few are HUGE. This is a wonderful opportunity to really examine the grain, subtle color variations and texture of this beautiful old bridge:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/photo-by-dave/12242010056/in/pool-e_nrailway/lightbox/

It says there are 2400 pictures, so browse through them and find something inspiring. There's no rhyme or reason to the order or organization, but you're bound to see a more than a few that are useful in your modeling:
https://www.flickr.com/groups/e_nrailway/pool/

Bill

Hi all

I have the shipyard on the shelf and is next on the list after Blue Sky.

Im in the process of collecting ref pics and information on shipyards of this type. My problem is most of the information is on larger shipyards that built bigger ships. Where in the United States would one find these smaller shipyards?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and will add to what is already becoming some interesting research.

just thought I'd post these for reference. From Miniature World in Victoria (went there with the brood a couple weeks ago), First one is one of an HO logging tree / sled etc. which I took with my phone through the glass- more just to note: someone had to cut all those stumps! The second one is one of a diorama meant for explanatory purposes re: sawmill (so is abstracted somewhat) but it does show a model of a wood burner someone was talking about modelling on another thread. These dios are a few decades old.

I stumbled onto a guy's website that is loaded with killer reference pictures. Whatever stage your at right now in your build or whatever material you're modeling (brick, wood, stone, metal siding), he's probably got a prototype picture you'll want to see. His name is Ray Dunakin and from what I can tell he's a G scale modeler, but he also likes to photograph and document ghost towns and mines. (I'd never heard of him but, who knows, maybe he's a Sierra West customer).

Need an idea for clapboard siding:
http://www.raydunakin.com/Site/Belmont_NV.html#20

Not sure how vines crawl up the corners of brick buildings:
http://www.raydunakin.com/Site/Goldfield_NV.html#5

Trouble with corrugated material?
http://www.raydunakin.com/Site/Darwin_CA.html#12

How 'bout an elevated fuel tank:
http://www.raydunakin.com/Site/Cinder_Mines_CA.html#41

Need some reference for that Jordan vehicle:
http://www.raydunakin.com/Site/Fish_Lake_Valley_NV.html#1

You get the idea... An amazing resource and I haven't even scratched the surface. Here's the main list:
http://www.raydunakin.com/Site/Ghost_Towns_and_Mines.html

As I continue work on my layout, I've been on the hunt for books on logging and the timber industry. How would you complete this statement? "The 3 books on logging every modeler should own are _____________" I'm looking for titles that you guys consider worthwhile. Don't be limited by the number "3" either. I have exactly NONE at the moment (well...other than the Kalmbach book on logging railroads).
There are no right or wrong answers...just your opinions.

Thanks,
Bill
