Muddy's Mack AC Bulldog build

edited November 12 in O Scale Builds
I rec'd the Bulldog the other day....and as always....had to open it up ......went right to work priming up the pieces. I prime all of my 3D printed details with Rustoleum dark gray auto primer....just a light coating. I like to use that as opposed to dead flat black...as it looks like an aged grimy black to me. I also like the way I can use it to help create shadows....and helps tone down some colors. (works particularly good painting little people with the shadows). I let the pieces dry overnight.

I'm anxious to build this for a diorama I need to have done for a local On30 Meet coming up....so I started the build.

Here are the parts laid out...as always...they are free of any flash or visible support nubs. I rinse everything in 70% alcohol...and primed.

I decided to go with a wine red color for the main body....and the wheels. The tires and the frame are left in that dark gray primer color...

The body and frame being printed as one piece makes assembly quick....the wheel/tire assemblies go on easy...that little white Styrene rod gets cut to mount the brake drum drive gear print ( make sure you watch the dip of the chain...I almost screwed up) then the wheel goes on. I use a gel CA glue.

Here is the Bulldog mostly assembled...Brett prints the roof separate to allow you to paint interior details. I painted the seat a medium tan...used Vallejo ivory for the gauges and the headlights. The radiator sides are a dirty brass color along with the headlight cases and the manometer. The engine, trans, driveshaft and other drivetrain components are done with Vallejo Smoke. the tow hooks out front and side grab handles are tarnished steel.

Brett, the chain drive is a work of art....you can SEE thru the links...I dry brushed them with oily steel...and will add some AK grimy grease highlights...as these would be kept lubricated well.
  • I'm at the point to stop for a bit...Once I get the tank...It'll be painted the same color red...and I have some special decals for it...that you'll have to wait to see. I'm also not going to weather it yet...but I foresee a good dusting of some grayish chalk....some hint of mud on the tires....a wee bit of rust in the appropriate places...I might also do something with the running boards too...

All and all very pleased with the kit....I know I'll need a few of them. I still have a few of the original metal Macks from years back....and this will joint Stubby and the AB Mack in my logging fleet...

More photos tomorrow if I can get some outside sunlight...it snowed a bit here today
  • I'm looking forward to the weathering you will do Art. You are excellent at weathering....Rick

  • Hi Art:
This is looking great, and I like the red color you chose for the body. Great job.
  • Thanks....I went with the red because of the tank option....not going Texaco....but you shall see...
